Today was all about being able to keep a rally going as long as you could between partners – sounds easy? Especially if you and your partner are helping one another? Right?
So to begin with, it was… until it wasn’t!
Realising that after you have been going for 6-7 mins, you start to make mistakes, or you start to get overconfident and hit the ball a little harder and a little faster. We then tried to slowly amp up the speed to find where we could sit and still keep the rally going.
After that, we moved onto a game of doubles, and Andy, with a cryptic clue, tried to hint towards what the overall teaching was…
Are you better off being harder to beat by essentially wearing your opponent down? By staying consistent and not going for a “blast it into next week” win? Or do you try to win with a “winner”?
Personally, when you think of winning a point, you do think of hitting a really hard, difficult-to-return shot in an epic movie finish. However…. watching the games play out, you really see how not going for glory was more beneficial overall.
Don’t get me wrong, there were times when you could push it, but this idea that you can win through endurance was very interesting. Maybe quite obvious, but to see it in motion really helped.
